Overview

Protection is a number, not a promise.

A vehicle, a shelter or a cabin is exposed to a defined ballistic threat. Plain structural steel does not stop it. Passive armour does — but only if it is built to defeat that specific threat and proven to a standard, not merely called ‘armoured’. And it has to go onto the platform without rebuilding it.

A graded stack, not a plate. Modern armour defeats a threat in layers: a hard strike face (ceramic or armour steel) breaks up and erodes the incoming threat; a composite backing of UHMWPE or aramid catches the remnant and spreads its energy; a spall liner traps the fragments so the protected face stays intact, with a low back-face signature.

Modular, so it earns its place. The protection is built as bolt-on panels — appliqué kits that add to a platform, scale with the threat and are field-replaceable after a strike. Weight and centre of gravity are managed against payload and mobility, not bolted on and hoped for.

Proven, not promised. Every configuration is proof-tested to the cited standard — STANAG 4569, NIJ, EN or IS — at an accredited range, with multi-hit and back-face criteria. Protection you can put a level on.

Armour that has not been shot is a claim, not a protection level. The number on the panel — the standard, the level, the multi-hit result — is the whole product.

The Panel Stack

A strike face (ceramic — alumina, SiC or B₄C — or armour steel) breaks up the threat; a composite backing of UHMWPE or aramid catches the remnant; a spall liner traps the fragments. Graded to defeat a defined threat with a low back-face signature.

Where ballistic protection goes wrong

In the specification and the proof, not the plate. Quoting ‘bullet-proof’ without a standard and a level means nothing; a panel proven against one threat can fail another; ignoring multi-hit or back-face signature passes armour that still injures through the plate; and untested edges, bolts and apertures quietly become the way through.

That is why protection is stated as a standard and a level, the panel is proof-tested to it, and the mounts, edges and apertures are qualified with the panel. Protection is only worth the level it can be proven to hold.

Q · 01 What protection levels can you build to, and how is a “level” defined?
Protection is always stated as a standard and a level, never as a vague ‘bullet-proof’. The main standards are STANAG 4569 (AEP-55), which defines vehicle-occupant kinetic-energy protection in levels 1 to 6; NIJ 0108.01, which grades ballistic-resistant materials in types up to IV; EN 1522 / EN 1523, which rate the bullet-resistance (FB classes) of windows, doors and shutters; and IS 17051, the Indian hard-armour standard. Each level is a precise definition — a defined threat, at a defined velocity, from a defined range, with a stated number of hits and an allowable back-face signature. A panel is built and then proof-tested to that exact definition, so ‘Level 4’ means a documented, repeatable protection, not a marketing word. We engineer the system to whichever standard and level your requirement cites, and we will tell you plainly what a given level does and does not cover.
Q · 02 Is the protection actually proven, or just specified on paper?
Proven — and by someone independent, not by us asserting it. The only honest evidence of ballistic protection is a proof-test: the panel or the built-up configuration is taken to an accredited ballistic range and shot to the cited standard, with the multi-hit pattern, the V50 (the velocity at which a threat has a 50% chance of perforating) and the back-face signature (how far the back of the armour deforms, which is what injures the person behind it) all measured, witnessed and documented. Only a configuration that passes is offered at that level. This is deliberately separate from a claim on a datasheet, and it is why we treat the ballistic-evaluation laboratory as a sister capability — the place that proves armour, distinct from this, which supplies it. If a requirement asks for a protection level, it gets a proof-test to match; nothing on this page claims a level that has not been shot.
Q · 03 What is the armour made of — and do you actually make the material?
We are deliberately clear about this split, because it is where a lot of suppliers are vague. The ballistic material itself is bought in, to a certified ballistic grade, from established specialist makers — that means the armour steel plate, the ceramic strike-face tiles (alumina, silicon carbide or boron carbide), the UHMWPE and aramid backing laminates, and the ballistic glass for vision blocks. These are proof-tested materials in their own right. What Neometrix engineers and fabricates is the system around them: the panel architecture (how the strike face, backing and spall liner are built into a panel), the modular mounting and interfaces, the protected enclosure (the container, shelter or cabin structure, with its doors, seams and apertures), the weight and CG engineering, and the integration and proof-test fixturing. So the raw protection is specialist material; the thing that turns it into a working, mountable, provable protection system is our engineering. No specific delivered protection system is claimed on this page.
Q · 04 What does “modular” actually buy me?
Three practical things. First, you add protection without rebuilding the platform: the armour is a bolt-on appliqué kit on an engineered frame and stand-off, so a vehicle, shelter or container is uparmoured through defined interfaces rather than being redesigned from scratch. Second, you scale protection to the threat: the same architecture can carry a lighter panel for a lower level or a heavier stack for a higher one, and different faces of the platform can be protected to different levels where the threat and the weight budget demand it. Third, and often most important operationally, a struck panel is field-replaceable: after a strike, the affected module is unbolted and swapped rather than the whole platform being taken out of service. The trade that has to be engineered, not wished away, is weight and centre of gravity — armour is heavy, and adding it changes payload, mobility and stability, so the mounting and the level are chosen against that budget from the start.
Q · 05 Can you protect a container, shelter or cabin — not just a vehicle?
Yes — protected enclosures are a core part of this, and they play directly to our fabrication and structural strength. An ISO container, a shelter or a crew cabin can be armoured to a level as a complete protected volume: the walls, roof and floor carry the panel stack, and — critically — the doors, seams, penetrations and apertures are engineered and qualified to the same level, with ballistic glass vision blocks where vision is needed. The apertures and joints are where an enclosure is usually defeated, so they are treated as carefully as the flat panels. Because Neometrix already fabricates containers, shelters and structural enclosures, the structure-and-integration half of a protected container is very much our own work; the armour material is the bought-in specialist part, integrated into a structure we build. The result is a habitable or usable protected space — a store, a workshop, accommodation or a command post — proven to a stated level.
Q · 06 Is this a weapon — and how do you keep it purely defensive?
It is not a weapon, and that distinction is deliberate and absolute here. This is passive, protective equipment — armour panels and protected structures whose entire job is to defeat an incoming threat and protect the people and the asset behind them. It does not fire, launch, target or carry anything; it has no active or offensive function at all. Everything on this page is framed the way protective equipment should be: a threat that the armour stops, a standard and level it is proven to, and the structure and integration that carry it. It sits in the same family as the other protective and life-safety work we do — the ballistic-evaluation laboratory that qualifies armour, protected shelters and containers, and safety-critical structures — and, as with those, we keep the treatment strictly to the machine and the structure. Customer identities, platform programmes and any operational detail stay off the page; what is described is the protection engineering, nothing more.
