An aircrew oxygen mask is life-support that gets worn, sweated into, dropped and stored. Every mask that comes off an aircraft is either restored to a known condition or scrapped. There is no third option, because the next person to wear it is betting on it.

Overview

Why a mask cannot simply be repaired.

The difference between a repair and an overhaul is the sentence at the end of it.

A repaired mask works. An overhauled mask is known to work — and can be shown to have been, years later.

Life-support wears out

Masks live hard lives. Rubber perishes and takes a set. Valves stiffen with sweat and salt. Harness webbing stretches. Hoses chafe. Shells crack where they are gripped. None of it is dramatic, and all of it degrades the seal and the flow the wearer depends on.

The failure mode that matters is quiet. A mask that leaks slightly, or breathes a little harder than it should, will not announce itself — it just gives the wearer less oxygen than the schedule promises, exactly when that margin is the thing keeping them conscious.

An overhaul ends in a signature

So the fleet does not repair masks. It overhauls them: takes each one back to component level, restores it to an approved build standard, proves it against the approved data, and certifies it serviceable with a record attached.

That certificate is the product. Everything else on this page — the layout, the clean room, the tooling, the benches — exists to make it honest.

The station outsiders underrate is the first one. Quarantine is what stops an uncertified item drifting back onto a shelf of serviceable stock — a paperwork failure with a life-support consequence.

1 · Receive & quarantine

Unserviceable items are booked in, identified and held physically apart from serviceable stock. Separation is the first safety feature of the line, not an administrative nicety.

2 · Strip

Each item comes apart to component level with the right tooling, so nothing is judged through an assembly. Parts are kept together and identified to their item.

3 · Clean

Components are degreased, washed, rinsed and dried to an oxygen-clean standard, then the cleanliness is verified — because a trace of oil in an oxygen path is a fire risk, not a blemish.

4 · Inspect

Every part is judged against approved criteria under good light and magnification: perished rubber, cracks, wear, corrosion, damaged threads. The verdict is accept, repair or scrap.

5 · Repair & rebuild

Approved-maker components replace what failed, and assemblies are rebuilt to the approved build standard, with traceability running from each part to the finished item.

6 · Test & certify

Delivery, breathing resistance, leak-tightness and valve function are proven across the schedule. Only then is the item certified serviceable, tagged, and its record closed and kept.

Q · 01 What is the difference between repairing a mask and overhauling one?
Evidence. A repair fixes the fault someone noticed: a torn harness gets replaced, a sticking valve gets freed, and the item goes back into use working better than it did. An overhaul makes no assumption about which parts are good. The item is taken back to component level, every part is cleaned and judged against approved criteria, anything outside limits is replaced with an approved-maker component, the item is rebuilt to an approved build standard, and then it is proven on a calibrated bench across the whole schedule before anyone signs for it. The difference matters because of how life-support fails. A mask rarely fails obviously; it drifts — a perished diaphragm here, a stiffening valve there, a slow leak past a worn seal — and the wearer gets a little less oxygen than the schedule promises without ever being told. A repair addresses the symptom that was visible. An overhaul restores the whole item to a known condition and produces the record proving it, which is what lets a fleet trust an item it did not watch being worked on. That record is also what an auditor will ask for years later, long after everyone who touched the mask has moved on.
Q · 02 Why does an overhaul line need its own clean room?
Because the item's working fluid is oxygen, and oxygen changes what dirt means. In an ordinary workshop, a trace of oil or grease on a component is untidy. In an oxygen system it is a fire and explosion hazard: oxygen does not burn, but it makes almost everything else burn far more readily, and under pressure a smear of hydrocarbon — or even a fingerprint — can ignite from the heat of compression or a spark and burn through metal. An overhaul line therefore cannot simply wash parts. It needs a controlled oxygen-clean process: dedicated degreasing and washing with compatible agents, thorough rinsing and drying, dedicated tooling that never sees ordinary lubricants, compatible materials throughout, and clean conditions for assembly. And critically it needs a verification step — a means of showing the components really are clean, not just believing they are, because cleanliness is invisible. That last point is what separates a facility that can certify what it ships from one that merely hopes. It is also the discipline this company already works to across its oil-free, high-pressure-gas systems, which is why the clean half of this facility sits naturally in our competence.
Q · 03 What is actually tested before a mask is certified?
The things a wearer would notice only when it was too late. Delivery: does the mask pass the oxygen it should, at the flows the schedule calls for, without starving the wearer at demand. Breathing resistance: how hard it is to inhale and exhale through the item, measured in both directions, because a mask that breathes heavily exhausts aircrew and is often the first sign of a perished or misassembled valve. Leak-tightness: whether the mask holds what it is given, tested both for outward leak and for inward leak that would dilute the oxygen with cabin air — the failure that quietly undoes the whole point of the system. Valve function: that the inhalation and exhalation valves seat, open and close as they should, in the right order, every breath. Around those sit the boring necessities: the correct build standard, the harness and hose condition, and the identification and traceability. All of it is measured on calibrated benches against the approved data for that item — not against a technician's judgement of what feels right — and the numbers are recorded, because the certificate is only as good as the evidence behind it.
Q · 04 How is this different from your component overhaul test benches page?
One is the instrument; the other is the whole workshop around it. The aircraft component overhaul test benches page is about the bench as equipment: the rigs that exercise an aircraft component and prove it against approved data, across families of components including pneumatic and life-support items. It answers the question “what do I test this on?”. This page answers a different question: “how do I run a repair line that takes an unserviceable mask and returns it to service?” — which needs the bench, but also the receipt and quarantine discipline, the strip stations and tooling, the oxygen-clean room and its verification, the inspection criteria, the rebuild standard, the calibration regime, the certification process and the records. Q · 05 Can the same line handle portable oxygen cylinders?
Yes, and it usually should, because the two items travel together in service and fail on the same neglect. A portable oxygen set is a small high-pressure cylinder, a regulator, a gauge, a hose and a mask in a carry frame, and a fleet that overhauls the masks but not the sets it carries them in has only solved half its problem. What the cylinders add to the flow is pressure work: periodic hydrostatic testing to prove the cylinder still safely holds its rated pressure, valve overhaul with approved components, internal inspection and internal cleanliness to the same oxygen-clean standard, and finally recharge with clean, dry, oil-free oxygen before the set returns to service. That last step connects this facility to the ground charging equipment described on our aircraft oxygen pages — a cylinder line is not much use without a clean way to fill what it has just certified. Sharing one line for both keeps the discipline, the records and the trained people in one place, which is cheaper and safer than running two half-capabilities. That approval belongs to the operator or the maintenance organisation, not to the company that builds their workshop. What we supply is the facility that makes the approval achievable: a line laid out so that flow and quarantine satisfy an auditor, a clean process that can be validated, benches that measure what the approved data asks for and can be calibrated to prove it, a records system that produces the traceability an approval requires, and training so the technicians work the process as written. In the same way, the airworthy components fitted during rebuild are sourced from their approved makers — we do not manufacture mask parts or claim design authority over the item. So the honest division is: the customer holds the approval and the data, the approved makers supply the parts, and Neometrix engineers and integrates the facility and the process that turn those into certified, serviceable items.
Q · 08 Why set up a local line instead of returning items to their maker?
Because of the clock and the shelf. Returning life-support items to their original maker works, but every item spends months in transit, customs and a queue, and a fleet must hold enough spare masks and sets to cover that entire loop for every aircrew member. That float is expensive, it ages on the shelf, and it grows every time the loop lengthens. A local overhaul line collapses the loop: items are booked in, worked and certified within the fleet's own cycle, so the float shrinks, aircrew are not flying on the last serviceable mask in the store, and a surge in flying does not become a shortage of life-support equipment. There is a second reason, which is why these requirements are usually written as indigenisation: a capability held at home is not exposed to another country's export rules, currency or priorities, and the knowledge of how the item is restored stays inside the organisation that depends on it. The trade-off is real — a local line must earn and keep its approval, its calibration and its discipline, which is work — but for a fleet of any size the arithmetic and the independence both point the same way.
