Overview

The force has to be housed — fast.

Soldiers have to live somewhere, and the demand for accommodation is constant — at military stations at scale, and most acutely at high-altitude and forward posts, where the building season is short and every day matters. The problem is that conventional wet masonry is slow: it needs curing, it is weather-limited, and in remote and high-altitude areas the logistics of sand, cement, water and skilled labour make it painfully hard. So the accommodation is built instead by fast, dry methods — a light-gauge steel frame or prefabricated insulated panels — that go up in a fraction of the time, in almost any terrain, and give a warm, durable, permanent-quality building at the end of it.

A real building, built dry. Light-gauge steel frame (LGSF) is the core method: a cold-formed galvanised-steel frame — studs, joists and roof trusses — erected dry and bolted or screwed together, then sheathed, insulated and clad. It is dimensionally accurate, strong, non-combustible, termite-proof and low-maintenance, and it carries a proper single- or double-storey building — not a temporary hut, but permanent-quality quarters that simply happen to go up fast.

Or prefab panels, where you need it quickest. Where the need is a rapid, warm shelter rather than a multi-storey block, prefabricated insulated-panel construction — PUF (polyurethane-foam) sandwich panels on a frame — gives a quick, weathertight, well-insulated hut, ideal for cold and high-altitude sites. Both methods share the same virtue: they are manufactured, transported and assembled, so the slow, wet, weather-dependent part of building is taken off the site.

Turnkey — design, supply, construct. Most requirements are ‘supply and construction’ — the customer wants a finished, habitable building, not a kit — and that is how we work: we design it to the number of men, the storeys, the site and the code; we supply the steel frame, the envelope and the fittings; and we construct it on site, fully fitted out with partitions, electrical, plumbing and finishes. One responsibility, from the frame to the handover.

The soldier does not care whether the wall is masonry or steel frame — only that the building is warm, dry, solid and there on time. Light-gauge steel and panel let us give a permanent-quality building, fast, where slow wet construction simply will not do.

Where accommodation goes wrong

In the speed, the climate and the finish, not the walls. Conventional masonry that is too slow leaves the force unhoused through a whole building season; an envelope that is under-insulated is unlivable at altitude; a building that is poorly fitted-out is a shell, not quarters; and a structure not designed to the snow, wind and seismic loads of its site is unsafe where it matters most.

That is why the method is chosen for speed and site (LGSF or panel, dry-built), the envelope is insulated to the climate, the building is fully fitted-out to be genuinely habitable, and the structure is engineered to the site’s loads and the code. The measure of an accommodation block is simple: the force is housed, warm and dry, on time.

Q · 01 What is a living accommodation shelter, and why light-gauge steel or prefab?
It is a building that houses troops — living quarters for officers, JCOs and other ranks — built by fast, dry methods instead of slow wet masonry. The reason for the method is practical. Armed forces need a great deal of accommodation, and they need it in places that are hard to build in: at scale on military stations, and above all at high-altitude and forward posts where the building season is only a few months, the weather is severe, and the logistics of cement, sand, water and skilled masons are punishing. Conventional masonry is slow — it needs curing time, it stops in bad weather, and it depends on wet materials and skilled site labour. Light-gauge steel frame (LGSF) and prefabricated insulated panels avoid all of that: the building is largely manufactured, transported and assembled dry, so it goes up in a fraction of the time, in almost any terrain and season, and gives a permanent-quality, warm, durable building at the end. It is not a compromise for a tent — it is a real building, built the fast way.
Q · 02 How is this different from your field technical shelter?
They are different products for different jobs. Our field technical shelter is a transportable, environmentally-hardened container-based shelter that houses equipment — a command post, communications or mission systems — with EMI, NBC and ballistic options; it is a piece of deployable technical infrastructure that protects kit and the people operating it. This living accommodation shelter is a building that houses people — a single- or double-storey barrack of light-gauge steel frame or insulated panel, with rooms, ablutions and services, where soldiers live. One is a hardened box for equipment, transported to site; the other is a permanent-quality building for people, constructed on site. They sit side by side on a base — the technical shelter you work in, and the accommodation you live in — and we build both, which is why they are cross-linked here; but they are engineered, and quoted, as distinct things.
Q · 03 What is Light Gauge Steel Frame (LGSF)?
LGSF is a way of constructing a building from cold-formed, galvanised light-gauge steel sections instead of masonry or heavy structural steel. Thin (typically ~1–2 mm) galvanised steel strip is roll-formed into C- and U-shaped studs, joists and tracks, and these are assembled — often from precise, factory-made panels — into the walls, floors and roof of the building, then sheathed, insulated and clad. Its advantages for accommodation are exactly what a remote posting needs: it is light (easy to transport to a forward site), fast and dry to erect (no curing, works through bad weather), dimensionally accurate (factory-made), strong and good in seismic zones, non-combustible, termite- and rot-proof, and low-maintenance and durable. It carries proper multi-storey buildings, so it is used for permanent-quality double-storey quarters, not just temporary huts. It is, in short, the modern way to put up a real building quickly.
Q · 04 What do you build, and what is bought-in?
We deliver the building turnkey — design, supply and construction — and integrate the specialist products into it. What Neometrix designs, supplies, constructs and fits out is the whole building: the light-gauge steel frame (or the prefab structure), the building envelope (insulated cladding, roofing, doors, windows), the internal fit-out (partitions, electrical, plumbing and sanitary, flooring and finishes), the foundation interface, and the erection on site — engineered to the number of men, the storeys, the site’s loads and the code, and handed over habitable. What is bought-in specialist is the manufactured product that goes into it: the PUF or insulated sandwich panels, the cold-formed steel sections, and the commodity sanitaryware, electrical fittings and services equipment. This is squarely our competence — it is the same fabrication, structures, shelter and turnkey-construction engineering behind our shelter and deployable-infrastructure work. So the specialist panels and sections come from the specialists, and the engineered, constructed, habitable building is ours. Q · 05 Can it be built at high altitude or in forward areas?
Yes — that is one of the strongest reasons to use it. High-altitude and forward posts are exactly where conventional construction struggles: the building season is short, temperatures are extreme, and getting wet materials and skilled masons to site is slow and expensive. A dry, prefabricated method turns that around. The steel frame or the panels are manufactured and quality-controlled off-site, transported (they are light and pack efficiently), and assembled quickly in the short window the weather allows, without curing or wet trades. The envelope is insulated to the climate, so the building is genuinely warm and livable at altitude, and the structure is engineered to the site’s snow, wind and seismic loads. The result is that a post can be properly housed in one season rather than several — which, at a forward location, is exactly the point.
Q · 06 Single or double storey, and how many men?
Both, and to whatever establishment the requirement sets. The buildings are configured as single- or double-storey (D/S) blocks, and sized to the number of occupants — requirements run from small 10- and 12-man shelters, through 20- and 40-man blocks, to 100+ man barracks — and are specified separately for officers, JCOs and other ranks, which differ in room layout, occupancy and ablution provision. Double-storey is common because it doubles the accommodation on the same footprint, which matters where usable, serviced land is limited. We engineer the block to the establishment: the number and type of rooms, the ablutions and services, the circulation and stairs, and the structure for the storeys and the site. The point of doing it in steel frame or panel is that none of that flexibility costs you time — a bigger or taller block is still a fast, dry build.
