We rebuild worn Tatra heavy trucks so they can serve for years more.

A worn truck comes in. We replace the major assemblies — engine, gearbox, brakes, wiring. We strip and overhaul everything else. It goes back out fit for years more service.

The work is fifteen packages and two parts lists. One list is replaced on every truck, whatever we find inside. The other only where the strip-down shows real wear. Getting that second list right is the whole job.

Overview

There are three ways to fix an old truck. This is the middle one.

The words get used loosely in tenders, so it is worth being exact about which job is being bought.

One list we can price exactly. The other we have to judge. That judgement is what you are buying.

Service, rebuild, life extension

A service puts a truck back to its maintenance baseline. A rebuild takes it back towards the condition it was in when new. Life extension sits between them.

It has a precise meaning. The major assemblies and sub-assemblies are replaced. Every system that is not replaced is opened and overhauled. Nothing is left untouched and nothing is guessed at.

That precision is useful to a buyer. A life-extension scope can be checked item by item, because it names what has to leave the truck. A service scope usually cannot, because it only describes a result.

What the truck gets back

We say measurable extra service life, not guaranteed. The work removes the parts that are known to limit life and records the condition of everything else. Nobody can promise a fixed number of further years, because how the truck is loaded, driven, maintained and stored is out of our hands once it leaves.

The fifteen packages

One is the heavy end: the engine and gearbox, overhauled and proved by NABL-accredited laboratory certificates rather than by our own word. Eleven are system-level work — lubrication, fuel, steering, electrical, transmission, intake and exhaust, brakes, central tyre inflation, suspension, cabin, and the diesel-fired cold-start heater that decides whether a truck starts in winter. Two are the finish: road-safety accessories, and body work with denting and painting.

The fifteenth is different

The last package is value addition: a 360-degree camera system, a dashcam, tyre-pressure monitoring, cabin stowage for four weapons, and a cabin fire extinguisher. None of that is restoration. The truck comes back with equipment it never had.

It is fitted while the truck is already stripped and its looms are already out, so it costs a fraction of what the same work costs as a separate retrofit later.

The gate that controls everything is the advance sample. Two complete trucks must be finished and approved before bulk work can start, so the opening weeks produce two trucks, not a rate.

1 · Induction

Trucks arrive in whatever condition service left them. We record what came in before anything is touched.

2 · Strip and assess

The strip goes far enough to expose every item on both lists. A steering box, a propeller shaft or a suspension yoke cannot be judged while it is still in the truck.

3 · Decide against two lists

Every part is tagged. On the must-change list, it is replaced however it looks. On the on-condition list, it is measured against a limit and the result is written down.

4 · Replace and overhaul

Heavy items go out complete. Brake gear is relined shoe by shoe. Wiring is not repaired — the cabin loom, body loom and undercarriage harnesses come out whole and go back new.

5 · Value addition and body

Cameras, dashcam, tyre-pressure monitoring, weapon stowage and the extinguisher are fitted as proper installations, not bolt-ons. Then body work, painting and the road-safety set.

6 · Prove it

Acceptance is stage by stage, by the customer's own board, at our premises and our cost. Material test certificates come with supply and the customer's laboratory decides.

Tatra 8x8

Four axles

The bigger job. More brake stations, more steering linkage, more of everything counted per corner. The value-addition package is the same, because awareness equipment does not scale with axles.

Tatra 6x6

Three axles

The same fifteen packages against a shorter driveline and fewer brake stations. Sharing the engineering across both is what makes either one affordable to prepare for.

Around the core

Scope options

Assembly replacement and system overhaul are the core. Around it sit induction and recovery, spares provisioning, crew and maintainer familiarisation on the new systems, and post-warranty support.

Anyone quoting both configurations at one rate has not costed the second. Per-corner items — linings, rivets, shoes, cylinders, dampers, wheel nuts — move with axle count, and they are the bulk of List A.

Where it fits

Fleets that are too useful to retire and too old to leave alone.

Life extension is what you do when the replacement is years away and the condition is not.

Heavy logistics fleets

Multi-axle load carriers and prime movers working off-road over long distances, where availability matters more than age.

Specialist carriers

Trucks carrying equipment worth more than the truck. Extending the carrier is usually the cheapest way to extend the system riding on it.

Cold and high altitude

Where the diesel-fired cold-start heater stops being a comfort item and becomes the difference between a truck that starts and one that does not.

Mid-life capability upgrade

The truck is already stripped, so this is the cheap moment to add cameras, tyre-pressure monitoring and safety equipment. Doing it separately means paying for the strip twice.

Getting a fleet back to one standard

Trucks drift apart over decades of unit-level repair. They come back to a single documented configuration, which is worth as much to the workshop as the new parts are.

Bridging a replacement gap

Where a new-vehicle programme exists but is years out, extension buys those years without pretending to be a replacement.

Q · 01 What is the difference between life extension, overhaul and rebuild?
They are three points on the same ladder, and the difference decides what you are entitled to get back. An overhaul restores a truck or an assembly to a serviceable standard: it is opened, worn items are renewed, and it goes back to work. A rebuild is more ambitious and takes the truck back towards its original condition, usually against a formal standard that defines what "original" means. Life extension is defined differently again, and the definition is about what happens to the assemblies rather than about how good the result is meant to be: the major assemblies and sub-assemblies are replaced, and every system that is not replaced is opened and overhauled. It is not the largest of the three in every respect. A full rebuild may go further on the structure. But it is the most specific about which parts leave the truck for good, and that specificity is what makes it checkable. A life-extension scope can be audited item by item because it names what must come out. An overhaul scope usually cannot, because it describes an outcome rather than a bill of material. If you are comparing bids, the one that has understood this will show you two parts lists. The one that has not will show you a price.
Q · 02 Why are there two parts lists instead of one?
Because two different kinds of decision are being made, and merging them ruins both. The first list is mandatory. Those parts are replaced on every truck whatever the strip-down finds. Brake linings, rivets and shoes, starter motors, the alternator, the clutch group, brake cylinders and valves, dampers, air cleaners, the complete wiring looms — these are not inspected and judged, they are simply renewed. Because the quantity is known before any truck is opened, that list can be fixed when the contract is signed, and the price for it is firm. The second list is condition-dependent. Steering gearboxes, propeller and drive shafts, oil coolers, air reservoirs, suspension yokes, windscreen glazing, the winch drive — each is measured against a limit once the truck is apart, and replaced only if it fails. That list cannot honestly be fixed in advance, because nobody can assess a steering box inside a truck that is still in service. The commercial effect is sharp in both directions. Price only the mandatory list and you have under-scoped the job, and you will be arguing about variations for a year. Assume the whole condition-dependent list and you have priced a rebuild and lost the bid. The skill in this work is the estimate between those two mistakes, and it comes from having stripped trucks of that age before and knowing what is usually found.
Q · 03 How many more years will an extended truck run?
We will not put a number on that, and we would be careful with anyone who does. What life extension delivers is measurable extra service life against a defined standard of work: a stated set of assemblies renewed, a stated set of systems overhauled, and a written record of what was found on each truck and what was done about it. That can be audited. A guaranteed number of further years cannot, because the truck's future depends on how it is loaded, where it is driven, how it is maintained and how it is stored, and none of that is in the contractor's hands once it leaves the gate. The honest way to put it is that the work removes the items known to limit life and documents the condition of everything else, so the fleet manager ends up with a real baseline instead of an assumption. There is one place where a firm guarantee does attach, and it is worth having: the workmanship. Two years from final acceptance, with a fifteen-day obligation to attend a reported defect and a financial penalty if we miss it. That is a promise about the work rather than a promise about the future.
Q · 04 What does laboratory evidence on the engine and gearbox prove?
It takes the claim out of our hands, which is the whole point of asking for it. The engine and gearbox overhaul is the heaviest and most expensive part of the job, and it is also the part a customer can least easily check by looking at it. Requiring that the overhaul carries NABL-accredited laboratory certificates means the statement "this assembly meets specification" is made by a laboratory whose own competence has been assessed, using methods inside its accredited scope — not by the party being paid for the work. The customer is not asked to take the contractor's word on the one item where taking it would be most expensive if it were wrong. It sits inside a wider chain that works the same way. Material test certificates come with supply, and the customer's own laboratory result, not ours, decides whether material is accepted. Read together, those two conditions describe a buyer who has been supplied badly at some point and has written the contract to make sure it does not happen again. A bidder who treats them as paperwork has misread them.
Q · 05 Why does delivery start slowly?
Because an advance-sample gate sits in front of bulk work, and it is the most commonly under-read clause in this kind of contract. Two complete trucks must be finished and submitted for approval within weeks of the award, and bulk work cannot begin until they are approved. The customer then has its own window to approve them or return a full list of required changes. Only after that does the line run at rate. The arithmetic that follows is unavoidable: the opening months produce two trucks and a lot of learning, and the rest of the fleet is delivered afterwards at a much higher rate. A plan that shows steady output from day one has not read the clause. There is a compensation built in, and it is worth knowing about. If the customer is slow to approve the sample, the delivery period is re-set for the length of that delay without penalty to the contractor. The gate is strict but it works both ways, and planning honestly around it is simple once it is acknowledged.
Q · 06 Has Neometrix done this before?
Work of this class has been quoted against successive Tatra heavy truck life-extension programmes covering both 8x8 and 6x6 fleets. We would rather say that plainly than dress it up, because in this field the useful question is not whether a supplier has a photograph to show you but whether it has read the scope properly. What we bring is the integrator's half of the work: programme engineering, the induction and strip-down discipline, assessment against both parts lists, assembly replacement and system overhaul, the quality and documentation chain that stage-wise acceptance demands, the value-addition fit, and the acceptance case itself. Q · 07 Do you have to be the vehicle manufacturer to bid this work?
No, and the way these tenders are written says so in commercial terms rather than technical ones. The qualification conditions set two separate turnover bars: one for the bidder, and one for the manufacturer of the assemblies being offered, with the manufacturer's bar about ten times the bidder's. A buyer expecting a single manufacturer to bid alone would have no reason to write two different thresholds. What it is describing is a pairing — an integrator carrying the programme, the process discipline and the acceptance case, working with a manufacturer carrying the assemblies. Alongside that sit an authorisation requirement where the bidder is not itself the manufacturer, a quality-system certification held by either party, a record of supplying the same category to a government buyer, and local-content thresholds that decide eligibility outright. Together they define the normal shape of this market rather than narrowing it to one company. The honest position for an integrator is to say which half it holds and name the pairing, not to imply it manufactures assemblies it does not.
Q · 08 Can the value-addition package be changed?
Yes, and it is usually worth discussing early. The package as commonly specified covers a 360-degree camera system, a dashcam, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, cabin stowage for four weapons and a cabin fire extinguisher — a mix of situational awareness, evidence capture and safety. None of it is restoration. All of it is capability the truck never had. Because it goes on while the truck is already stripped and its looms are already out, the extra cost of adding it now is a fraction of what a separate retrofit programme costs later. That argues for deciding the content generously at specification stage rather than trimming it and coming back to the subject in three years. Where a fleet has its own preference — a particular camera layout, a monitoring system that has to work with an existing fleet-management arrangement, different stowage — that is straightforward to accommodate, because the fitting work is engineered rather than bolted on. What is not straightforward is adding it after the truck has gone back into service, which is exactly the mistake this package exists to prevent.
