Su-30 MKI multipurpose installation trolley. The hydraulics, indigenised.

When the Su-30 MKI fleet’s Indian manufacturing and overhaul organisation needed the multipurpose installation trolley’s Russian-origin hydraulic power beam rebuilt, we reverse-engineered the in-service unit into a complete drawing set and delivered the package new-built. Twin independent 200 bar hand-pump circuits, 4/3 directional control at each lifting point, 15 µm filtration, and a fabricated beam that is its own 15-litre reservoir — raising four-tonne aircraft aggregates at no more than 44.5 kg of handle effort. Complete trolleys and Flanker-family GSE engineered to order.

Overview

OEM-orphaned hydraulics. Rebuilt at home.

Every Flanker operator knows the problem: the ground equipment that came with the fleet ages faster than the fleet itself, and the original supply chain answers slowly, expensively, or not at all. The installation trolley’s hydraulic beam is a case in point — and a solved one.

As-received Russian-origin hydraulic power beam of a Su-30 MKI installation trolley at the Neometrix works — worn orange fabricated beam with hand pump, direction control valve, needle valves and inline filter
Fig · 02 What arrived: the in-service, Russian-origin beam — the pattern for the indigenised build (2016)

The multipurpose installation trolley positions heavy Su-30 MKI aggregates during servicing, and its hydraulic power beam does the lifting: a fabricated box-section that is simultaneously the structure, the manifold, and the 15-litre oil reservoir, with a hand pump at each end driving its own lifting point through its own valve block.

The in-service unit arrived at our Noida works with no drawing set behind it. We engineered one — general arrangement, hydraulic circuit through three revisions, fitting layouts, and a bill of material re-specified onto current catalogue hydraulics available in India — then built the package new and delivered it in 2016. No imported spares dependency, no OEM queue.

No drawing set came with it — so we made one, and the next beam is a purchase order away.

In the fleet’s hands

Engineered, built and delivered to the Su-30 MKI fleet’s Indian manufacturing and overhaul organisation for use at a forward fighter base — the package left our works for the fleet’s support organisation in 2016.

Indigenised · Import Substitution

From orphan to drawing set

Reverse-engineered from the in-service Russian-origin unit into a complete Neometrix drawing set — GA, circuit, fittings, BOM — with every hydraulic component re-specified to catalogue items procurable in India.

Engineered · 200 bar

Precision by hand power

Two independent 200 bar circuits — one per lifting point — each filtered to 15 µm, held by a non-return valve, protected by its own relief, and lowered under needle-valve metering. No electricity, no compressed air, no single point of failure.

Architecture

One beam, two circuits, zero utilities.

The circuit below is the delivered system in schematic form — the key elements in the oil’s path from hand pump to lift cylinder and back.

The Power Beam

A fabricated steel box-section that is structure, manifold and reservoir in one — 15 litres of oil inside the beam itself, a 40 µm filler-breather on top, and heavy bolted flange plates at each end mounting it into the trolley. Rebuilt to Neometrix drawings with a bolted top plate for full internal access.

Arc · 02

The Hand Pumps

One 200 bar hand pump at each end, on 600 mm levers sized so that raising a 4,000 kg load never demands more than 44.5 kg at the handle. Flight-line-proof by design: no electrical supply, no compressed air, nothing to fail but muscle.

Arc · 03

The Control

Each circuit runs pump → 15 µm filter → non-return valve → 4/3 lever-operated direction control valve (63 lpm class) to its cylinder: raise, positively hold, and power-lower on demand. Throttle-check valves and a needle-valve bypass meter every descent; twin relief valves cap the system.

Arc · 04

The Indigenisation

Every component re-specified from the Russian-origin original onto standard catalogue hydraulics procurable in India — pumps, filters, valves, hoses — documented in a Neometrix BOM and drawing set through three circuit revisions. Spares are now a local purchase, not a foreign-exchange case.

FAQ

Common questions.

Plain-language answers from the engineering team.

Q · 01 What exactly did Neometrix deliver?
The trolley’s complete hydraulic actuation package: the fabricated power beam with its integral 15-litre reservoir, both hand pumps, both direction-control valve stations, filtration, relief protection, pipework and end mounting flanges — built new to our own reverse-engineered drawing set and delivered in 2016. The trolley’s structure and running gear remained the customer’s existing hardware; complete trolleys are engineered to order.
Q · 02 Why two fully independent circuits?
Because an installation lift is a two-handed job. Each lifting point gets its own pump, filter, non-return valve and 4/3 control valve, so two operators can raise, hold and trim their ends independently — and a fault in one circuit never drops the other. Aligning a heavy aggregate to an airframe is millimetre work; independent circuits are what make fine, differential positioning possible by hand.
Q · 03 How does the raise–hold–lower control work?
Hand-pump strokes send oil through the 15 µm filter and a non-return valve, which traps the load the instant pumping stops — the hold is hydraulic, not human. The 4/3 valve directs oil to raise or lower; descents are metered through throttle-check and needle valves so a four-tonne aggregate comes down at walking pace, never in a rush. Twin relief valves cap circuit pressure, protecting the operator, the beam, and the load above all.
Q · 04 Can you supply the complete installation trolley?
Yes — as an engineered-to-order build. The delivered hydraulic package is the heart of the trolley, and the structure, wheels, steering and load interfaces around it are conventional Neometrix fabrication scope, the same discipline behind our munitions handling and hydraulic servicing trolleys. Send the duty — aggregate masses, bay geometry, travel — and the trolley is designed around it.
Q · 05 We operate Flankers outside India — can you support us?
That is precisely the situation this package was born from — an operator with ageing Russian-origin GSE and no responsive OEM channel. The path is proven: ship us the unit (or its survey data), we rebuild the drawing set, re-specify components onto current catalogue hydraulics, and manufacture new with full documentation. Export engagements are handled subject to Government of India authorisation, managed as part of the programme.
Q · 06 What does “indigenised” actually mean here?
It means the equipment stopped being an import. Before: a Russian-origin beam with no drawings, foreign spares, and a queue. After: a Neometrix drawing set — GA, circuit, fittings, BOM — and a build whose every hydraulic component is a standard catalogue item procurable in India. The customer owns supportability for the life of the fleet: repeat units, spares and overhauls are all a local purchase order, not a foreign-exchange case.
