A marinised handheld searchlight designed to the Indian Navy’s staff requirement for damage-control parties: 3,000 lumens for eighty minutes, a beam that reaches through a hundred metres of dense smoke — in one hand, under 3 kg. Overview

Power fails. Smoke fills. The torch is the plan.

When a compartment loses power — fire, flooding, action damage — the damage-control party’s first tool is not a pump or an extinguisher. It is light: enough of it, for long enough, through smoke, in one hand, from equipment that survives the same emergency it is illuminating.

The compact damage control torch is designed clause-by-clause to the Indian Navy’s statement of technical requirement for exactly that duty. A solid-state light engine delivers 2,000 lumens on low and 3,000 on high through a toughened, non-shattering flat lens — a beam engineered for throw, so it penetrates more than 100 metres of dense smoke rather than blooming back into the operator’s eyes. A full charge runs at least eighty minutes at full output; the battery is a sealed module the operator swaps in seconds, so endurance is really a question of how many modules the locker holds.

The body is machined aluminium, hard-anodised against salt and hard use, sealed to IP65 class, and shaped for one gloved hand — a deep-finned head, a slim battery barrel, twin sealed switches under the thumb, and a detachable finger-groove grip. The whole torch, with accessories, stays under three kilograms and inside a 300 × 150 × 150 mm envelope — the approved design is 259 mm long.

The Light Engine

The staff requirement framed the duty around a 30 W metal-halide HID lamp; the approved production design delivers the same 2,000/3,000-lumen low/high duty with a solid-state light engine — instant full output, no restrike delay, no fragile arc capsule, and endurance the battery can actually sustain. The reflector and flat toughened lens are engineered for throw: a tight, high-intensity core that stays legible through smoke at over 100 m, with ≥80 minutes at full output on one charge.

The Battery Module

A sealed lithium-ion module — 12–18 V, ≥4,000 mAh, standard COTS cell format — threads into the barrel on an M53 interface and swaps in seconds. It charges on or off the torch in ≤4 hours, reads out charge at 25/50/75/100%, warns at low voltage and low capacity, and a deep-discharge cutoff at 70% of rated voltage protects the cells. Design life ≥5 years or 1,000 charge cycles, maintenance-free.

The Marinised Body

High-strength aluminium, hard-anodised; corrosion-resistant against marine salt and oil contamination, fire-resistant and high-impact. Ingress protection is IP65-class per IS 12063, shock is NSS Grade II, and the torch must work — and keep working — at 65 °C for fifteen minutes and 90% relative humidity. Twin sealed switches give continuous, press-to-operate and low/high control; the finger-groove grip handle unbolts when the stowage demands it.

Charging & Assurance

The rugged charger reaches full in ≤4 hours from 220 V shipboard supplies at 50 or 60 Hz, cuts off automatically, and carries 250 V over-voltage protection with cabling per IS 5608. USB Type-C charging and USB-A discharge add the power-bank function. Electronics are built on PCBs per JSS 52300, environmentally stress-screened, EMI/EMC per MIL-STD-461 — with ≥1,000 h MTBF and an 8-hour burn-in on the first 10% of any production batch.

Q · 01 What makes a damage-control torch different from a good industrial torch?
The duty cycle and the survival case. A commercial torch is designed to make light; a damage-control torch is designed to make light after the event that killed the ship’s power — so the specification is written around shock to naval Grade II, salt, oil, fire-resistance, 65 °C operation, IP65-class water exposure and electromagnetic compatibility with the ship’s systems, before a single lumen is counted. Then the duty: at least eighty minutes at full output, one-handed, with controls a gloved thumb can find in the dark. Most torches meet some of that list. The SOTR requires all of it at once.
Q · 02 How does a beam penetrate 100 metres of dense smoke?
By putting the energy in a tight core instead of a wide wash. Smoke defeats torches two ways: it absorbs light along the path, and it scatters light back into the operator’s eyes, which is why a wide flood beam in smoke mostly illuminates the smoke. The answer is throw optics — a deep reflector and flat lens that concentrate the 3,000-lumen output into a high-intensity core with a controlled corona. The core carries the distance; the corona gives just enough context to move. That geometry, not raw lumens, is what the >100 m smoke-penetration requirement actually tests.
Q · 03 The requirement mentioned an HID lamp. Why is the approved design solid-state?
The staff requirement benchmarked the duty on a 30 W metal-halide HID lamp — the brightest compact technology of its drafting era. HID, however, needs a warm-up to full brightness, cannot restrike instantly after interruption, and carries a fragile arc capsule. The approved production design delivers the same 2,000/3,000-lumen duty with a solid-state light engine: instant full output, instant restrike, no capsule to break under Grade II shock, and meaningfully better endurance from the same battery. The drawings carrying that engineering were approved by the naval design authority — the duty is the requirement; the technology is how it is best met.
Q · 04 What does JSS 55555 qualification actually involve?
JSS 55555 is the tri-service environmental test standard, and the torch’s matrix reads like a naval career: vibration at 2–33 Hz, sixteen hours at 55 °C, drip exposure, damp heat, twenty-eight days of mould growth, seven cycles of tropical exposure, salt corrosion, and shock to NSS Grade II — plus IP65-class ingress per IS 12063 and EMI/EMC per MIL-STD-461. Because the SOTR treats this as a first-of-type item for the service, it requires the design to be validated by full type test at NABL-accredited or government laboratories, with the results valid for five years. Production then inherits the proof: witnessed acceptance tests and burn-in on every batch.
Q · 05 What is the power-bank function for?
A damage-control party’s other equipment — radios, gas detectors, intercoms, phones — dies in the same blackout the torch is built for. The battery module therefore charges over USB Type-C and discharges over a USB-A port, so a spare module in the DC locker is not just torch endurance: it is a sealed, shock-rated power bank built for the same environment as everything else in the bag. Charge state reads out at 25/50/75/100%, and a deep-discharge cutoff protects the cells no matter what is plugged into it.
Q · 06 What is the current status — and can you build to our specification?
The torch is engineered to order. The design exists at production-drawing level — drawn to the Indian Navy’s SOTR, with the drawings, acceptance-test plan and EMI/EMC test plan approved by the naval authorities — and manufacture, type test and delivery are undertaken against contract. For other navies, coast guards or industrial fleets, the qualification programme is re-scoped to your environmental and shock regime, your mains voltages and your documentation standards, with a clause-by-clause compliance matrix returned within two working days of receiving the specification. Export engagements are managed end-to-end, subject to Government of India authorisation.
