Details

The 45 kVA Ground Power Unit (GPU) is a robust, trailer-mounted system engineered to provide reliable electrical power to aircraft during ground operations. It delivers both 400 Hz AC power—the standard frequency required by most aircraft systems—and 28V DC output for auxiliary and starting applications. This dual-output capability makes the unit highly versatile for use in aviation maintenance, servicing, and operational readiness.

At the core of the GPU is a diesel engine-driven alternator system. The engine drives a high-speed alternator, ensuring stable frequency and voltage output even under dynamic load conditions. An integrated Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) maintains consistent voltage levels, while electronic speed control ensures frequency stability in compliance with aviation standards.

The system is equipped with an advanced PLC-based control architecture, which manages all operational logic, safety interlocks, and sequencing. This ensures safe startup, shutdown, and continuous operation. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) provides operators with real-time data, including voltage, current, frequency, engine parameters, and fault status. It allows intuitive control of the unit without requiring direct interaction with internal control systems.

Power distribution is designed for flexibility and efficiency, featuring:
• Dual 400 Hz AC output circuits
• Dual 28V DC output circuits
• Capability to operate AC and DC outputs simultaneously

The GPU includes a fully integrated electrical control cabinet, housing key components such as the PLC, ECU (Engine Control Unit), power meters, relay drivers, and communication modules. These components work together to ensure precise monitoring, control, and protection of the system.

Safety is a critical aspect of the design. The unit incorporates multiple protection mechanisms, including:
• Over-voltage and under-voltage protection
• Frequency deviation protection
• Overcurrent and overload protection
• Emergency stop functionality
• Fault detection and alarm logging via HMI

The rugged chassis and body structure are built from heavy-duty fabricated steel, ensuring durability in demanding environments. The unit is mounted on a trailer with integrated cable trays, fuel tank, and easy-access maintenance points. It is designed for mobility and ease of deployment in airports, airbases, and remote locations.

The GPU operates efficiently across a wide environmental range, with the capability to function in temperatures from -32°C to +55°C, high humidity conditions, and altitudes up to 4000 meters. This makes it suitable for both civilian and defence aviation applications.

Additional features such as optional 28V systems, communication interfaces (RS485/Ethernet), and advanced monitoring capabilities enhance the system’s adaptability and integration into modern ground support infrastructure.

Overall, the Ground Power Unit combines high reliability, operational flexibility, advanced control systems, and robust construction, making it an essential solution for aircraft ground power requirements.
