A complete mobile aircraft liquid-oxygen replenishment outfit: a road-going LOX tanker of about 1,000 litres paired with a towable 220–260 litre dispenser that charges an aircraft’s on-board LOX converter on the apron. Overview

An aircraft breathes oxygen. Someone has to bring it.

Combat and transport aircraft carry their aircrew oxygen as liquid oxygen in an on-board converter — and that converter has to be topped up between sorties, on the flight line, safely, from equipment that keeps the LOX cold, clean and under control. That is the whole job of this outfit.

The outfit comes in two parts that work together. The tanker is a double-walled cryogenic vessel of about 950–990 litres mounted on a road-legal diesel vehicle: it collects liquid oxygen from the supplier and carries it to the airfield. The towable dispenser — 220 to 260 litres on a wheeled trolley — is filled from the tanker through braided cryogenic hoses, then wheeled to the aircraft to charge its LOX converter through a charging coupling.

Both vessels are the same cryogenic discipline: an austenitic SS-304 inner shell inside a carbon-steel outer, with vacuum insulation holding the liquid at −183 °C. A pressure-building coil raises head pressure to move the liquid without a pump; twin relief valves, a divert ball valve and a rupture disc make sure a cryogenic fluid that expands 860-fold on boiling can never be trapped. Every wetted part is oxygen-clean and LOX-compatible.

Liquid oxygen is unforgiving — violently oxidising, deeply cold, and expanding the instant it warms. The engineering here exists so the handling is routine.

The Road Tanker

A 950–990 litre double-walled horizontal vessel on saddle mounts, carried on a BS-VI diesel 4×2 cab-chassis (day cabin, driver + 2, power steering, vacuum-hydraulic brakes, parking brake, RTO-registered). SS-304 inner vessel, carbon-steel outer, vacuum-perlite insulation; operating 30–80 psi, design 250 psi hydro-tested; fill and discharge ports; a funnel-drained stainless operating cabinet at the rear keeps ice-melt off the chassis.

The Safety Train

Liquid oxygen expands roughly 860 times on boiling, so no volume can ever be locked in. Each vessel carries two pressure-relief valves through a divert ball valve — one path always live while the other is serviced — backed by a rupture disc, plus a manual vent. A pressure-building coil raises head pressure to transfer liquid without a pump. Every valve is a cryogenic extended-spindle type kept clear of frost.

The Towable Dispenser

A 220–260 litre full-vacuum-jacketed vessel on a wheeled trolley with tyre guards and a height-adjustable towing end that drains the liquid forward for maximum use. Its own operating cabinet carries the content gauge, pressure gauge, and pressure-regulating, shutoff and relief valves; design pressure 140–150 psi, operating 40–75 psi.

The Aircraft Interface

Braided metal flexible hoses (3.5–4 m, LOX-compatible) link tanker to dispenser and dispenser to aircraft. The aircraft-side hoses carry charging couplings that mate to the on-board LOX converter, with spare couplings supplied. Every part in liquid-oxygen contact is austenitic stainless or a certified LOX-compatible material, oxygen-cleaned to standard.

Vehicle-mounted tanker & towable dispenser

The tanker vessel is carried longitudinally on saddle mounts over the vehicle’s ladder frame, with the operating cabinet at the rear where all gauges, relief valves and the fill and discharge ports are grouped for one-side operation. The towable dispenser mirrors the same cryogenic and safety design at a smaller capacity for hand movement up to the aircraft.

Every liquid-oxygen wetted component — vessel, pipework, valves, fasteners, hoses and couplings — is austenitic stainless steel or a certified LOX-compatible material, degreased and oxygen-cleaned so nothing in the path can react with the oxidiser it carries.

Q · 01 Why do aircraft use liquid oxygen instead of gas cylinders?
Density. One litre of liquid oxygen becomes about 860 litres of gas, so a small on-board converter holds hours of aircrew breathing oxygen in a fraction of the space and weight of high-pressure cylinders — which matters enormously in a fighter. The trade-off is that the ground crew now needs cryogenic equipment to store, transport and transfer LOX at −183 °C safely, which is exactly what this outfit provides: the aircraft gets the compact converter, and the airbase gets the tanker and dispenser that keep it charged.
Q · 02 How is this different from your 800-litre LOX dispenser?
The 800-litre unit is a static storage-cum-dispenser — it lives where the LOX is stored and dispenses from there. This outfit is mobile: a road-going tanker that fetches liquid oxygen from the supplier and drives it to the airfield, plus a small towable dispenser that is wheeled right up to the aircraft. Think of the static dispenser as the fuel point and this as the bowser and the servicing trolley together. Many airfields run both — this mobile outfit and the static 800-litre dispenser are complementary.
Q · 03 How does LOX move without a pump?
Self-pressurisation. A pressure-building coil draws a little liquid from the bottom of the vessel, warms it through an ambient heat exchanger so it boils, and returns the gas to the top — raising the head pressure until it gently pushes liquid out of the discharge line. It is elegant precisely because it has no moving parts to fail cold: the fluid’s own boiling does the work. Relief valves and the rupture disc then cap that pressure so the self-building process can never run away.
Q · 04 Why two relief valves through a divert valve, and a rupture disc?
Because trapped liquid oxygen is the hazard the whole design exists to prevent. A cryogenic vessel must never be isolated with no relief path — any heat leak boils the liquid and the pressure climbs fast. Two relief valves on a divert ball valve mean one is always protecting the vessel while the other can be tested or replaced without ever leaving it unguarded; the rupture disc is the last-ditch device that bursts if both reliefs are somehow overwhelmed. It is the same layered, no-single-failure thinking used on any serious pressure system.
Q · 05 What certification does the tanker carry?
The pressure vessels are designed to ASME Section VIII and the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules — SMPV(U) — with type approval from the Chief Controller of Explosives (CCOE/PESO) where the tanker falls under its purview, and third-party inspection and radiography of the welds. On delivery the vessel comes with material test certificates, an inner-vessel pressure/hydro-test certificate stating thickness and test pressure, and calibration certificates for the pressure and content gauges — the documentation that lets a customer put a LOX vehicle legally on the road and into service.
Q · 06 Can you build to our specification — and export it?
Yes — this outfit is itself a build-to-specification contract, engineered clause-by-clause to a customer’s requirement for capacities, vehicle class, fittings and certification regime. Send your requirement — tanker and dispenser volumes, carrier vehicle, aircraft converter coupling, and the pressure-vessel code and inspection regime you work to — and a compliance matrix returns within two working days.
