Overview

The range comes to the unit — and nothing leaves it.

A skill practised annually is a skill in name only, and marksmanship is the most perishable skill a force carries. The obstacle is geography: an outdoor range demands land, a safety danger area reaching kilometres downrange, weather, daylight and travel — and a unit in a city cantonment, a high-altitude post or a dense base simply cannot get there weekly. The armed forces’ own tenders say what the answer is, again and again: containerised, tubular and modular composite indoor ranges — factory-built, delivered, commissioned in days — and the upgradation of existing halls into ranges that meet today’s containment and air standards.

Containment is the whole first argument. The envelope is built from modular panels of AR500-class high-hardness steel — the tenders’ own specification — faced with anti-ricochet rubber linings that absorb a round’s energy instead of returning it. Ceiling and wall baffles are arranged so that no trajectory a firer can produce, high or low, leaves the envelope; penetrations for air and cabling are sealed and shielded. At the far end waits the bullet trap — granulated-rubber berms that swallow rounds gently, or steel deceleration designs that spin them to rest — collecting every round in trays for lead recovery: the environmental story and the accounting story in one device.

Air is the invisible safety system. Every shot puts combustion products and lead particulate into the room, and the range that ignores this poisons its own instructors by instalments. The modular range treats air as a first-class discipline: downrange laminar flow at the firing line — the firer always stands in clean air moving away from them — with filtration, negative pressure and monitored exchange rates. Acoustic treatment does the same for sound: a live range that occupied buildings can stand beside.

Targets, scores and control close the loop. Automated turning and running targets run programmable sequences; electronic scoring senses every hit and reports to lane displays and the instructor’s console; lighting shifts between day, night and low-light modes. And above it all sits range control in the discipline of our training-facility line: interlocked entry — no door opens on a hot range — master cease-fire, communications and CCTV. The instructor owns the exercise from first round to cleared range.

The parameters below describe a reference installation. The form, lanes, distance and outfit all follow from three givens: the training syllabus, the calibre classes fired, and the ground the range must stand on.

Where indoor ranges go wrong

In the air and the corners, not the steel. A range lined with hard surfaces returns fragments to the firing line; a baffle scheme designed for the average shot instead of the worst one leaves an escape trajectory; a trap that splashes back turns containment into a hazard of its own; ventilation added as an afterthought leaves instructors breathing lead every working day; and a range without entry interlocks depends on everyone’s perfect discipline forever — which no safety case should.

So the envelope is engineered from the worst trajectory inward — panels, linings and baffles closing every path; the trap is chosen for the calibre mix and proven against splash-back; the air system is designed with the range, not bolted on — laminar at the line, filtered, negative, monitored; the acoustics are treated to the neighbours’ standard, not the owner’s tolerance; and control is interlocked by machinery — doors, cease-fire, lighting states — because discipline deserves engineering’s help. Q · 01 Why bring a live-fire range indoors at all?
Because the alternative is a skill practised too rarely to exist. Marksmanship decays in weeks — grouping opens, handling slows, confidence goes — and rebuilding it annually at a distant field range is training theatre, not training. The outdoor range’s problem is geometry: it must own not just its hundred metres of ground but a safety danger area reaching far beyond, clear of people, roads and buildings, in a country where land is the scarcest resource a station has. Weather, daylight and travel take the rest. The indoor modular range deletes the geometry: the envelope replaces the danger area — steel, linings, baffles and trap doing with engineering what the outdoor range does with empty kilometres — so the whole facility fits on a hardstanding inside the unit’s own wall. Fire at midnight, in monsoon, at altitude; walk back to barracks after. The forces’ own tenders — containerised tubular ranges by the dozen, mobile two-lane units, corps-scale composite halls and the upgradation of old ranges — are the demand signal of a simple discovery: availability is the biggest single upgrade marksmanship can buy.
Q · 02 How does the envelope guarantee nothing escapes?
By designing from the worst shot inward, in three layers. The first layer is the structural envelope: modular panels of AR500-class high-hardness steel — the specification the tenders themselves write — sized so that no round the range is rated for can pass a wall, ceiling or floor. The second layer manages what steel alone would make worse: bare hardness returns fragments, so every strike face carries anti-ricochet rubber lining that absorbs energy and lets nothing bounce back toward the firing line. The third layer closes the geometry: a firer can shoot high, low or wild, so ceiling and wall baffles are arranged by trajectory analysis — overlapping angled surfaces that intercept every possible path before it finds a vent, a light fitting or a door seam, with every penetration sealed and shielded. The layers end at the trap, which is not a wall but a machine for stopping: granulated rubber that swallows rounds over centimetres, or steel decelerators that spin them to rest — either way without splash-back, into collection trays. The proof is in commissioning: the envelope is inspected surface by surface, the baffle geometry verified against the rating, and the range signed off before the first serial fires.
Q · 03 Why is ventilation treated as a safety system?
Because the range’s slowest hazard is the air, and its victims are the people who serve there longest. Every shot releases combustion gases and fine lead particulate at the firing line — invisible, odourless after the first minutes, and cumulative. A range that treats ventilation as an afterthought poisons by instalments: firers a little, range staff and instructors — who stand there every working day — a great deal. The modular range engineers the air with the same seriousness as the steel. Laminar downrange flow at the firing line means clean air enters behind the firer and moves past them toward the trap, at a designed velocity — the firer always upwind of their own shot. Filtration captures the particulate before discharge; negative pressure keeps range air from leaking into lobbies and control rooms; exchange rates are monitored, not assumed. Housekeeping completes the system — the trap trays and lining maintenance that keep settled lead managed rather than disturbed. It is the same lesson our training-facility line teaches about fire and water: the hazard you cannot see gets the most deliberate engineering, because nobody will demand it by instinct.
Q · 04 What do the targetry and scoring systems actually provide?
The difference between shooting and training. A static paper target measures a session; an instrumented range teaches inside it. The target line carries automated mechanisms — turning targets that expose for the syllabus’s seconds and turn away, running targets that cross the range at set speeds — driven in programmable sequences so a serial presents the same challenge to every firer, every time, repeatable by the instructor at the console. Electronic scoring closes the feedback loop: hit sensing at the target reports each shot’s position instantly to lane displays and the console, so a firer sees their group while the memory of the trigger press is still fresh — which is when correction actually works — and the instructor sees every lane at once, with records kept per firer, per serial, per qualification. Lighting modes — day, night, low-light — put the syllabus’s conditions under the console’s control. The result is throughput with fidelity: more firers, more serials, better feedback, and a paper trail of qualification the training establishment can stand behind.
Q · 05 How is a hot range kept safe — and who is in charge?
The instructor is in charge, and the machinery makes that ownership physical — the same discipline our damage-control training facility runs on: the person conducting the exercise owns every element of it. The core is interlocked entry: when the range is hot, the doors are locked by the control system — not by procedure, by machinery — and no door opens on a live serial; conversely the range cannot go hot until the envelope reports closed. The master cease-fire is one action at the console: lighting changes state, targets turn away, and the serial is over — instantly, unambiguously, for every lane at once. Around that core: communications to every firing point, CCTV so the instructor sees each lane and the trap line, and lighting states that signal the range’s condition to everyone inside without a word being said. The procedural layer — range orders, details, the drills every force already owns — sits on top; the engineering’s job is to make the safe path the only path the doors, lights and targets physically allow. Discipline deserves that help, and a safety case should never rest on everyone being perfect forever.
