Overview

One threat, two defences.

A CBRN event contaminates two things at once: the people, vehicles and equipment that were exposed, and the air everywhere around them. Neither is solved by the other. You have to wash the contamination off what was hit, and separately filter the air so that where people shelter, work and are treated stays clean. This page is both systems — decontamination, and collective protection.

Clean it off — decontamination. A pre-wash removes the gross contamination, a dosed decon agent neutralises what remains, a dwell gives it contact time, and a hot-water rinse and monitoring confirm the person, vehicle or item is clean. Mechanically it is a heater, pumps, agent dosing, tanks and spray lances on a skid or trailer — a fluid system.

Keep it out — collective protection. Outside air is drawn through a particulate pre-filter, then an NBC filter (HEPA plus impregnated activated carbon) that stops both particulate and gaseous contamination, and an over-pressure fan pushes that clean air into the shelter so it sits at a slight positive pressure — which, with an airlock, means contamination can’t leak in.

Both play to our franchise. The decontamination system is fluid handling and skid fabrication; the collective-protection system is air handling built into a shelter — the same engineering behind our gas-pipeline systems and our field shelters.

Decontamination and collective protection answer the same threat from opposite ends — one cleans what the threat landed on, the other keeps it out of where people have to breathe. A serious CBRN posture needs both.

Where CBRN protection goes wrong

In the details that let the threat through. Decontamination with too little contact time or the wrong agent leaves contamination behind; a collective-protection shelter that loses over-pressure — a stuck fan, a leaking seal, an airlock left open — is no longer protected; and a filter run past its capacity without monitoring quietly stops filtering.

That is why the decon process is matched to the threat and monitored to a clean result, the shelter is built to hold over-pressure with a real airlock, and the filter capacity and change-out are engineered in. CBRN protection is only worth the leak it doesn’t have.

Q · 01 What is the difference between decontamination and collective protection?
They are two separate defences against the same CBRN threat, working from opposite ends, and a serious posture needs both. Decontamination deals with contamination that has already landed on something — a person, a vehicle, a piece of equipment, a patch of ground — and its job is to remove or neutralise that contamination and confirm the result is clean. It is an active, wet process: pre-wash, apply a decontamination agent, give it contact time, rinse with hot water, and monitor. Collective protection deals with contamination in the air, and its job is to keep it out of a defined space — a shelter, a command post, a cabin — so that the people inside can work, rest, or be treated without protective masks and suits. It does that by drawing air through an NBC filter and holding the space at a slight over-pressure behind an airlock, so any leakage is outward. You cannot substitute one for the other: decontamination cleans what was hit but does nothing for the air; collective protection keeps a space clean but does nothing for a contaminated vehicle outside it. This page covers both because a real CBRN requirement almost always needs both.
Q · 02 What threats does it protect against?
The four classes covered by the term CBRNChemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (the older term is NBC, nuclear-biological-chemical). In practice that means chemical agent vapour and liquid, biological aerosols, and radioactive particulate (fallout / dust). The important point is that this is entirely defensive equipment: everything here exists to remove contamination from people and kit, and to exclude it from a protected space — there is nothing offensive on this page, and we deliberately describe the threats only as the contamination the system defends against, not in any operational detail. The system is configured to the threat: the decontamination agent and process are chosen for the contamination type, and the NBC filter media are specified to stop the relevant particulate and gaseous hazards. So while the machine and its plumbing, filtration and over-pressure are the same in principle, the agents, filter media and monitoring are matched to what the requirement says the system must protect against.
Q · 03 How does an NBC filter actually work?
In two stages, because a CBRN threat has two physical forms — particles and gases — that need different physics to remove. First, a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter traps the particulate hazards: dust, aerosols, radioactive fallout particles and biological agents, all of which are solid or liquid particles, captured to very high efficiency by the fine filter medium. Second, a bed of impregnated activated carbon removes the gaseous and vapour hazards: activated carbon has an enormous internal surface area that adsorbs chemical vapours, and it is impregnated with additives that chemically react with and hold the specific vapours that plain carbon would not retain well. A particulate pre-filter sits ahead of both to catch coarse dust so the expensive main filter is not clogged prematurely. Because the carbon is gradually consumed and the HEPA gradually loads, the filter has a finite capacity, so the system is designed with the right filter size for the required duration and with a defined change-out regime — a filter that is quietly past its capacity is the classic way collective protection fails, which is why capacity and monitoring are engineered in from the start.
Q · 04 What are the over-pressure and airlock for?
Together they turn a filtered air supply into a genuinely protected space. Filtering the incoming air is necessary but not sufficient: if the shelter simply leaked, contaminated air would find its way in through every seam, cable gland and door gap. The fix is over-pressure — the blower pushes in more clean, filtered air than leaks out, so the inside of the shelter sits at a slightly higher pressure than outside, and every leak path therefore flows outward, carrying clean air out rather than letting contaminated air in. The remaining problem is the door: opening it would dump the over-pressure and let contamination in. That is what the airlock (or protective entrance) solves — a small ante-chamber with two doors, used one at a time, so people can enter and leave, and decontaminate on the way in, without ever creating an open path from outside to the protected volume. Engineered properly, the two give a shelter that stays clean and habitable indefinitely in a contaminated environment, as long as the filter has capacity and the over-pressure is maintained — which is why we build the shelter to actually hold pressure and instrument the fan and pressure, rather than treating them as an afterthought.
Q · 05 Do you make the filter media, detectors and decon agents?
No — and we are clear about the boundary, because it is the honest one. The NBC filter media (the HEPA element and the impregnated activated carbon), the CBRN detectors and monitors, and the decontamination agents themselves are specialist products — the filter media and agents are consumables with defined performance and shelf-life, and the detectors are precision instruments — and they come from established specialist suppliers. What Neometrix engineers, builds and integrates is the equipment around them: the decontamination apparatus (the hot-water or steam heater, the pumps, the agent dosing and proportioning, the tanks, hose reels and spray lances, and the skid or trailer), and the collective-protection system (the filter housing, the over-pressure blower, the airlock and protective entrance, the ducting and the controls), and the integration of both into a shelter, vehicle or deployable package. That division plays to strength: the hardware — fluid handling, air handling, fabrication and shelter integration — is exactly our franchise, while the filter chemistry, detection and agents are best sourced from the specialists who make them. Q · 06 How does this relate to your field shelter and gas-pipeline pages?
It is the protective, CBRN-hardened edge of exactly those two franchises — which is why we can build it credibly rather than as a bolt-on. Our field technical shelter and command posts already provide the transportable, environmentally-controlled protected structure; collective protection is precisely the CBRN upgrade to one of those shelters — add the NBC filtration, the over-pressure blower and the airlock, and build the shelter to hold pressure, and it becomes a protected space. That, in turn, is an air-handling problem, which sits on the same competence as our medical & industrial gas-pipeline systems — moving, filtering and controlling a gas to a specification. The decontamination side is a fluid-handling problem — heaters, pumps, dosing, tanks and spray — which is our fluid-systems and skid-fabrication work. And it sits alongside our ballistic protection as the other half of a protective-defence line: one keeps out projectiles, this keeps out contamination.
