Hydraulic Valve Testing Glossary

Spool Valve Clearance

Spool valve clearance refers to the microscopic gap between the spool and sleeve that directly influences internal leakage, friction, and valve response behaviour. Tight clearances improve sealing and volumetric efficiency but increase sensitivity to contamination and thermal expansion. Larger clearances reduce sticking but increase leakage losses. During testing on a hydraulic control valve test bench, engineers evaluate leakage and hysteresis characteristics to ensure optimal tolerance. This parameter is critical for maintaining flow accuracy and consistent valve performance across varying pressure and temperature conditions.

Pilot-Operated Relief Valve

A pilot-operated relief valve uses a secondary pilot stage to control the opening of the main valve, allowing precise pressure regulation at higher flow rates. Compared to direct-acting valves, it provides improved stability and reduced pressure override. Testing includes cracking pressure validation, pressure stability, and dynamic response using a valve testing system. These valves are widely used in industrial and mobile hydraulic systems where efficient pressure control is essential for safety, reliability, and energy efficiency.

Proportional Directional Control Valve (PDCV)

A proportional directional control valve (PDCV) regulates hydraulic flow and direction in proportion to an electrical input signal. It enables precise control of actuator speed and position. Testing focuses on flow gain, hysteresis, and response time using a hydraulic valve test bench. Engineers generate command-versus-flow curves to identify nonlinearities and optimize performance. These valves are essential in aerospace and automation systems where smooth, repeatable motion control is required.
