Dust and Sand Test Chamber. Dust goes where the air goes.

A dust test is an air test. Dust has no way into a casing of its own: it goes where the air takes it, through every leak, and a casing that cools draws air in.

So the chamber is built around three things: a steady dust cloud, air drawn through the leaks, and a verdict found by opening the item and looking.

A single dust test chamber: a tall rectangular cabinet of brushed stainless steel and grey painted steel on a heavy grey steel base, with a large hinged front door sealed by a black rubber gasket and fitted with a round glass viewing window, a grey circulation blower housing at the top joined to the chamber by round stainless steel ducting that runs down the side, and a stainless steel hopper with a flanged outlet at the base, and no people

Overview

Why a dust test is an air test.

Because dust goes only where the air takes it, and the air of a casing moves through its leaks.

THE CHAMBER IN ONE PICTURE 1 LOAD item mounted as it is used 2 EXPOSE dust or sand carried by moving air 3 INSPECT item opened, looked at and run THE ITEM mounted as it is used THE DUST dry, graded, kept in the air THE VERDICT dust inside, or none Dust goes where the air goes.
Fig · 02 — The chamber in one picture: the item is mounted as it is used, exposed to dust or sand carried by moving air, then opened and looked at.

Dust goes where the air goes.

What the chamber is for

It shows what dust and sand do to equipment before the equipment meets them. The item sits in a closed chamber where fine dust is kept in a cloud, or where dust or sand is blown across it at a set air speed. It suits enclosure dust tests, blown dust and sand, and settling dust.

Why dust goes where the air goes

Dust is carried by air. In the open, the wind carries it to the surface. Inside a casing, the air that moves through every leak carries it in. So a dust test is a test of how air moves, as well as of how dust looks.

Why a casing breathes

Equipment that runs hot and then cools has air inside that expands and contracts. As it cools, the pressure inside falls below the pressure outside, and outside air is drawn in through every leak, with its dust. A test for such a casing holds a partial vacuum inside it, so that every leak is tried.

Why the dust has to be dry and graded

Damp dust clumps and falls out of the air, and the cloud thins. The dust is a fine, graded material kept dry, and the chamber keeps its humidity low. A cloud that is steady and even is what makes a test repeatable.

Why blown sand is a different test

Blown dust and sand is not only about leaks. Moving grit abrades surfaces, clogs openings and works into joints and bearings, and the damage grows quickly with air speed. So the air speed and the grit are set from the duty.

Why settling dust is a third test

Some dust does little harm while it is in the air and a great deal once it has settled, on insulation and on contacts. A settling test lets the dust fall under its own weight, and looks at what has gathered.

Why the verdict is looked at

A dust test ends with the casing opened. For a dust-protected casing the question is whether enough dust has got in to interfere. For a dust-tight casing the question is whether any has. Both are answered by looking, and by running the item afterwards.

The method

Specify, mount, dust, air, inspect, and prove.

Six steps in a fixed order. The two shaded steps are the ones a quick order skips.

THE METHOD · SIX STEPS, IN THIS ORDER ONLY SPECIFY the item, the dust and the level of protection sought MOUNT item fixed as it is used, with any breathing line DUST dry, graded dust brought to a steady, even cloud AIR air drawn through the leaks or blown across the item INSPECT item opened and looked at, then run PROVE findings kept; record handed over with it the two shaded steps are what a quick order skips - the air that pulls dust through the leaks, and opening the item to look ONE BREATHING CASING PRESSURE INSIDE THE CASING AGAINST TIME in service and under test - an illustration, no values pressure inside ambient time in service: the casing breathes as it heats and cools test: held below ambient, so every leak is tried the test holds the worst case of what the casing does in service WHAT THE CHAMBER TELLS YOU IT FINDS IT TELLS YOU dust inside a sealed casing whether the seals hold grit blown across the item abrasion and clogging dust settled on surfaces what gathers on contacts each is found by looking, after the exposure
The step people underrate is the air. A casing that has sat in a dust cloud without air drawn through its leaks has not had its seals tried.
THREE WAYS A DUST TEST LETS YOU DOWN DAMP DUST the cloud thins out dust in the air time dry dust damp dust dust that has taken up moisture clumps and falls out of the air, so the cloud thins and the test is weaker than the plan assumed NO PULL ON THE CASING the leaks are never tried dust found inside time partial vacuum held no pull on the casing an enclosure that breathes draws dust in as it cools; without a held partial vacuum the test may never try the leaks that breathing finds TOO GENTLE A BLOW the abrasion is never reached damage air speed gentle blow set speed the damage grows quickly with air speed, so a blow that is too gentle leaves out the abrasion that the duty will bring A cloud that thins, a leak never tried, a blow too gentle: three ways to prove too little.
Fig · 03 — Three ways a dust test lets you down: the dust is damp, the casing is given no pull, and the blow is too gentle — a drawing of the idea, with no values.

1 · Specify

The item, the dust and the level of protection sought are stated by the customer, and the chamber is sized to the item.

2 · Mount

The item is fixed as it is used, with any breathing line fitted, and operated or not as the test plan says.

3 · Dust

Dry, graded dust is brought to a steady, even cloud, or fed into the air stream for a blowing test.

4 · Air

Air is drawn through the leaks by a held partial vacuum, or blown across the item at a set speed.

5 · Inspect

The item is opened and looked at, then run, so that any dust inside, and what it has done, is seen.

6 · Prove

The findings are kept, and handed over with the item.

Work content

What the chamber contains, element by element.

Read it as a checklist: a chamber missing a row will pass an item that fails in service.

Configurations

One method, three ways to build the chamber.

The method, the record and the look-inside rule are shared. What changes is the size of the item, and whether the dust is a cloud or a blow.

Bench chamber

Cabinet, fan and vacuum

A cabinet for enclosures and small items, with a circulated dust cloud and a held partial vacuum on the casing, and a viewing window on the test.

Walk-in chamber

Blower, room and recovery

A room-sized chamber for large items and whole equipment, with a blower, a dust recovery stage and a way to move the item so that every face meets the dust.

Blowing tunnel

Blower, tunnel and dust feed

A tunnel that carries dust or sand across the item at a set air speed, for the tests that are about abrasion and clogging.

THREE WAYS TO SUPPLY THE CHAMBER · ONE METHOD CABINET FAN VACUUM BENCH CHAMBER enclosures and small items, dust cloud BLOWER ROOM RECOVERY WALK-IN CHAMBER large items and whole equipment BLOWER TUNNEL DUST FEED BLOWING TUNNEL a set air speed over the item ONE METHOD: SPECIFY, MOUNT, DUST, AIR, INSPECT, PROVE the same dry-dust rule · the same look-inside rule · one record per test The method and the record are the same across all three. Only the scope of supply changes.
Fig · 06 — Three ways to build the chamber, one method: a bench chamber, a walk-in chamber, or a blowing tunnel.

And the part that is not equipment at all, yet decides all three: the test plan. It fixes the dust, the air, the time and the way the item is opened and looked at, and it is written from the item's duty, not from the chamber.

05
Where it is used

Wherever dust is in the air, and the item has to keep working.

The common thread is equipment that will sit in dust or sand, and a test that gives the dust the way in that service will give it.

Enclosures and housings

Where a case, a cabinet or a connector housing is proved dust-protected or dust-tight, and the claim has to be shown.

Field equipment

Where equipment works outdoors, in places where dust and sand blow, and has to keep working.

Seals and gaskets

Where a door seal, a cable gland or a shaft seal is tried with the cloud, because a seal that looks sound can still breathe.

Development and qualification

Where a design change is shown against dust before it is released.

FAQ

Common questions.

Longer answers, for readers who want the reasoning.

Q · 01 What does a dust and sand test chamber actually do?
It exposes an item to dust or sand under control, and then lets you see what the exposure did. In one test a steady cloud of fine dust surrounds the item while a partial vacuum is held inside it. In another, dust or sand is blown across the item at a set air speed. In a third, dust settles on it under its own weight. The chamber does not repair or improve an item. It shows what the item does when dust gets to it.
Q · 02 Why is a dust test an air test?
Because dust has no way into a casing of its own. It goes where air goes. In a cloud, air carries it to every face. Inside, the air that moves through the leaks carries it in. A casing that runs hot and then cools breathes: as it cools, the pressure inside falls below the pressure outside, and air is drawn in through every leak. A chamber that only makes a cloud misses this. The enclosure test therefore holds a partial vacuum on the item, to try every leak the way the casing's own breathing would.
Q · 03 What is the difference between dust-protected and dust-tight?
IEC 60529 uses two codes. A dust-protected casing may let some dust in, as long as not enough gets in to interfere with how the item works or to impair its safety. A dust-tight casing lets none in. Neither is judged from outside. After the exposure the casing is opened and looked into, and the item is run. The chamber's job is to make the exposure fair, so that the answer means something.
Q · 04 How is blown dust and sand different from the enclosure test?
It tests something else. Air carrying dust or sand is blown across the item at a set speed, and the question is what the moving grit does: whether it abrades surfaces, clogs openings, or works into joints, seals and bearings. The damage grows quickly with air speed, so the speed and the grit are set from the duty. The humidity is kept low during a dust test, because damp dust clumps and the cloud thins. The enclosure test asks whether dust gets in. The blowing test asks what grit does once it arrives.
Q · 05 Is this the same as the rain rig, climatic chamber or salt spray pages?
No, and the differences are worth stating precisely. The rain water test rig page sprays water on an item to test its waterproofing. The climatic and environmental test chambers page holds temperature and humidity. The salt spray and corrosion test chamber page tests corrosion in salt fog, and lists a sand and dust chamber as a one-line sibling variant. This page is the full treatment of that variant: the chamber for dust and sand, where the exposure is a cloud, a blow or a settling, and the air is the thing being controlled. It does not replace any of them, and it does not claim what they claim a second time.
Q · 06 Has Neometrix built one of these?
We would rather answer this plainly than let a page imply otherwise. Neometrix has quoted against successive dust and ingress-protection test requirements, and no delivered dust and sand test chamber is claimed. What stands behind the offer is adjacent: Neometrix engineers environmental chambers (see the climatic and environmental test chambers page), a rig that tests waterproofing (see the rain water test rig page) and a chamber for corrosion (see the salt spray and corrosion test chamber page). The blower, ducting, vacuum pump, dust feeder and instruments are catalogue items, bought in, not invented. What Neometrix engineers is the chamber around them: the sealed chamber and door, the air system, the dust feed and recovery, the controls and protection, the procedure and the record. So the honest position is that the chamber is engineered to order, the neighbouring disciplines are in the building, and the first chamber of this exact kind will be built around the customer's own items rather than taken off a shelf.
Q · 07 Which standards apply, and what can the chamber not do?
IEC 60529 is the public reference for the ingress-protection codes, IEC 60068-2-68 for environmental testing with dust and sand, and MIL-STD-810 Method 510 for blowing dust and blowing sand. This page prints none of their dust quantities, particle sizes, air speeds, vacuum levels or durations, and no edition year: those come from the standard the customer names and from the customer's duty. The chamber exposes an item and records the exposure. It does not certify the item or anything else: this page claims no certification or accreditation. No dust, speed, pressure or time figure is printed here, and approval of an item for use rests with the customer and the authority they name; none is claimed here.
Q · 08 What do you need from us to quote?
Six things, and most of them describe your item rather than the chamber. First, the item: its kind and size, and whether it is operated during the test. Second, the protection sought: dust-protected, dust-tight, or a blowing test, and the standard you work to. Third, the dust: its kind and its grade. Fourth, the air: whether a cloud with a partial vacuum, a blow at a set speed, or a settling. Fifth, the look inside: how the item is to be opened and inspected. Sixth, the record: what you want kept with each test. From that we come back with a chamber concept, a written test plan you can check, and a budgetary price.
