02
Working Principle

How a PSA oxygen generator works.

Air is about 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen. A PSA oxygen generator uses zeolite molecular sieve to hold back the nitrogen and deliver the oxygen.

Step · 01

Compressed Air Supply

A screw-type compressor feeds an air receiver; a pre-filter, refrigerated dryer, micron and activated-carbon filters remove moisture, oil and dust.

Step · 02

Nitrogen Adsorption

Clean, dry air enters the first tower, where zeolite molecular sieve adsorbs nitrogen and lets oxygen pass to the oxygen buffer tank.

Step · 03

Regeneration

When the first bed is saturated, flow switches to the second tower while the first depressurises, vents nitrogen and is purged with a little product oxygen.

Step · 04

Continuous Supply

The towers alternate automatically, so a constant flow of oxygen passes through a bacteria filter to the point of use.

In practical terms, a PSA oxygen generator is a compressed-air train, two adsorber towers, an oxygen buffer tank and a control panel working as one PSA system for oxygen. Because separation happens at ambient temperature from air alone — no cryogenics and no bottled supply — the same principle scales from a 100 LPM unit to a 3000 LPM plant.

03
Hospitals

PSA medical oxygen plant for hospitals.

A hospital-scale oxygen supply that runs from ambient air, electricity and a compressor.

A PSA medical oxygen plant produces oxygen at 93±3% purity, the Indian medical standard cited in the NAMO™ manual, directly on the hospital premises. Neometrix supplies it as an oxygen generator for hospitals of every size — from community health centres to district and military hospitals — and the same design serves ICUs, oxygen therapy units and ambulance cylinder-filling stations.

Each plant is a complete PSA medical oxygen generator: the manual lists a screw-type compressor, refrigerated air dryer, multistage coalescing filters, a medical-grade air receiver, a medical-grade oxygen buffer tank, micro and bacterial filtration, and a PLC control system.

  • PLC control panel with HMI touchscreen and an oxygen sensor indicating product purity.
  • 30-minute backup to the control system for emergency support.
  • Servo Voltage Stabilizer to avoid the effect of voltage fluctuation.
  • Pre-assembled skid for easy integration and installation; components selected so the plant can be customised later.
  • Inlet air quality to ISO 8573 Class 4; manufactured under Neometrix’s ISO 13485:2016 quality management system.

Definition

What does PSA mean in an oxygen gas plant?

PSA stands for Pressure Swing Adsorption.

In an oxygen gas plant, PSA means the plant separates gases by changing pressure. At high pressure, nitrogen is attracted to the surface of the zeolite molecular sieve (“adsorbed”) while oxygen passes through; when pressure is reduced, the nitrogen is released (“desorbed”) and the bed is ready for another cycle.

The “swing” is the pressure alternating between the two towers. The same technique, with a carbon molecular sieve, produces nitrogen — see the Neometrix PSA nitrogen generator.

05
Comparison

Onsite oxygen plant vs cylinders.

Cylinder-based oxygen means storage, transport and refilling. An onsite oxygen plant removes that dependency. Where a facility still wants cylinders, a PSA plant can also feed a cylinder-filling station.

Oxygen sourceAn onsite oxygen plant generates oxygen from ambient air, continuously, at the point of use.
Cylinder supplyRequires storage, transport, refilling schedules and an external gas vendor, with a risk of running out at the worst time.
LogisticsOnsite plant removes cylinder and liquid-oxygen deliveries; only electricity and routine maintenance are needed.
PurityPSA plants deliver 93±3% oxygen, the Indian medical standard, held by a purity sensor with alarms.
ReliabilityTwin-tower cycling gives uninterrupted flow; a 30-minute control backup and voltage stabiliser protect against supply disturbances.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Plain-language answers from the engineering team.

Q · 01 What is a PSA oxygen generator system?
A PSA oxygen generator system separates oxygen from compressed ambient air using Pressure Swing Adsorption. Two towers filled with zeolite molecular sieve adsorb nitrogen in turn: one tower produces oxygen while the other regenerates, so the supply is continuous.
Q · 02 What purity does a PSA medical oxygen plant deliver?
Neometrix NAMO™ series PSA medical oxygen plants are supplied with purity as per the Indian medical standard, 93±3% oxygen, as stated in the NAMO™ series operation manual and on the 200 LPM and 500 LPM product pages.
Q · 03 What capacities are available in the NAMO™ PSA oxygen plant range?
The NAMO™ series operation manual lists models of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 LPM (NAMO™ 100 to NAMO™ 3000). Dedicated pages are available for the 200 LPM and 500 LPM plants.
Q · 04 What compressed air quality does a PSA oxygen plant need?
The manual specifies inlet air complying with ISO 8573 Class 4, and the plant is supplied with a screw-type air compressor, air receiver, refrigerated dryer and multi-stage filtration. The manual notes that warranty is not covered if inlet air temperature is below 5°C or above 40°C, or if the inlet air does not meet ISO 8573 Class 4.
Q · 05 Is an onsite oxygen plant better than oxygen cylinders for a hospital?
An onsite PSA plant produces oxygen from ambient air continuously, so a hospital does not depend on cylinder storage, transport and refilling schedules or on an external gas vendor. Control-system backup (30 minutes), a purity sensor and PLC alarms support continuous operation.
Q · 06 How is a PSA oxygen plant monitored and protected?
A PLC control panel with an HMI touchscreen monitors the plant, an oxygen sensor indicates product purity, and a 30-minute backup supports the control system in emergencies. A Servo Voltage Stabilizer protects against voltage fluctuation, and the plant is pre-assembled for easy installation.
