    What is tested

    What each hydrogen test proves.

Hydrogen is a small, fast-moving molecule, so each test targets a different failure.

Burst testRaises pressure until a hydrogen component or tank fails, to prove its burst margin inside an enclosed chamber. See the H2 burst test machine (to 3,500 bar) and the burst chamber for hydrogen cylinders (to 5,000 bar).
Leak testChecks that a component keeps hydrogen in, with dry hydrogen or forming gas and mass-spectrometer detection. See the H2 leak testing machine and the dynamic high-pressure leak test rig.
Pressure cyclingFills and vents a tank thousands of times to find fatigue failures. See the hydrogen pressure-cycling test facility.
Pre-cooled exposureExposes valves to hydrogen pre-cooled to −40 °C, as it arrives from a dispenser. See the pre-cooled hydrogen exposure test machine.
Full qualificationType-qualifies vehicle fuel-system components across several test methods in one facility. See the hydrogen component test system and the fuel-system component test system.
Materials & enginesEmbrittlement tests show how hydrogen weakens high-strength materials, and the engine bench tests hydrogen combustion. See the embrittlement test system and the hydrogen piston engine test bench.
Production, power & refuellingEquipment for making, compressing and dispensing hydrogen, and for testing electrolysers. See the green hydrogen plant, the electrolyser test station, the boosting station and the refuelling station.

    Choosing

    Choosing hydrogen test equipment.

    Five questions settle most selections.

Start with the component, the pressure and the standard — the machine follows.
    • What are you qualifying? A valve, a fuel-system component, a cylinder or a full tank decides the machine.
    • Which test? Burst, leak, pressure cycling or pre-cooled exposure each use a different machine.
    • What pressure? Give the working pressure and the test multiple. Machines range from 1,000 bar leak testing to 5,000 bar burst.
    • Which standard? Tell us whether you work to ISO 12619, UN ECE R134, AIS 157 or GTR-13 so the machine can be configured to match.
    • Test or produce? Some customers need a test machine; others need a plant, boosting or refuelling station. This page covers both.

For background reading, see our guides to hydraulic test benches and aerospace test benches.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions.

Plain-language answers, drawn from the individual product pages.

Q · 01 What is hydrogen test equipment?
Hydrogen test equipment applies pressure, temperature and cycling to hydrogen components and tanks and checks that they hold, seal and survive. It covers burst, leak, pressure-cycling and pre-cooled exposure testing, plus stations for testing electrolysers and materials.
Q · 02 Which standards do your hydrogen test machines follow?
The component test machines are built to ISO 12619, UN ECE R134 and AIS 157. The pressure-cycling facility follows the GTR-13 and ISO 19881 pattern, the green hydrogen plant references ISO 22734, and the refuelling station references ISO 19880 and SAE J2601.
Q · 03 What pressures can the hydrogen burst and leak machines reach?
The H2 burst test machine reaches 3,500 bar, and the burst chamber for hydrogen cylinders is rated to 5,000 bar for cylinders up to 3.0 m by 900 mm. The H2 leak testing machine covers 0.5 to 1,050 bar, and the dynamic leak rig reaches 1,000 bar.
Q · 04 Can you test hydrogen tanks and cylinders?
Yes. The burst chamber, the dynamic high-pressure leak rig and the pressure-cycling facility are all built for hydrogen cylinders and tanks, and the volumetric expansion test system covers hydrostatic testing of gas cylinders. Tell us the tank size, working pressure and the standard you qualify to.
Q · 05 Do you supply equipment for producing and refuelling hydrogen?
Yes. Neometrix engineers green hydrogen generation plants, electrolyser test stations, hydrogen boosting stations and refuelling stations, with fuel-cell power systems for sites that need clean, quiet power.
Q · 06 Can the equipment be built to order?
Yes. Most hydrogen systems on this page are engineered to order. Send the component or tank, working pressure, test medium and standard, and we will propose a configuration. A hydrogen engine test bench has been supplied to a German research institute.
