What is tested

Hydro, burst and leak: what each test proves.

A pressure test answers a different question depending on how it is run.

Hydrostatic / proof testHolds the part at a pressure above working pressure to confirm strength and leak-tightness without destroying it. Used on shells, cylinders, hoses, pipes and valves. See the bomb shell machine, the hydrostatic test bench and the proof pressure rig.
Volumetric expansionFor gas cylinders, the hydrostatic test also measures how much the cylinder swells under pressure and how much of that is permanent. See the volumetric expansion test system.
Burst testRaises pressure until the part fails, to prove the burst margin. Done behind an explosion-resistant enclosure. See the burst chamber (to 5,000 bar) and the hose test bench (to 2,500 bar).
Leak testMeasures how much escapes, from pressure-hold checks to helium mass-spectrometry. See the high pressure leak testing machine, the helium leak detection system and the aerospace pressure and leak test rig.
Pressure cyclingRepeats the pressure swing many times to find fatigue failures that a single test would miss. See the pressure cycle test system and the hydrogen pressure-cycling facility.
CalibrationKeeps the gauges and transmitters on every machine honest. See the pressure calibration bench.

Choosing

Choosing a pressure testing machine.

Five questions settle most selections.

Decide the test and the pressure first — the machine follows.
  • Which test? Proof, burst, leak or cycling decide the machine family above.
  • What pressure? Give the maximum test pressure. Benches range from 70 bar up to 5,000 bar for burst work.
  • Liquid or gas? Hydrostatic testing uses liquid; pneumatic and leak testing use gas. Hydrogen service needs purpose-built, safety-interlocked machines.
  • How big is the part? Part size and weight set the chamber, fixture and changeover time.
  • Which standard applies? Tell us the specification you test to, such as IS 5844 or ISO 12619, so the machine can be configured to match.

For background reading, see our guides to hydraulic valve testing and aerospace test benches.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Plain-language answers, drawn from the individual product pages.

Q · 01 What is a pressure testing machine?
A pressure testing machine pressurises a component, such as a shell body, cylinder, hose, pipe or valve, with liquid or gas and checks that it holds the test pressure without leaking, deforming or bursting. It is used for acceptance, qualification and life testing.
Q · 02 What is the difference between a proof test, a burst test and a leak test?
A proof (or hydrostatic) test holds a part at a pressure above its working pressure to confirm it does not leak or deform. A burst test raises pressure until the part fails, to find its true limit. A leak test measures how much escapes, from a pressure-hold check up to helium mass-spectrometer detection.
Q · 03 Should I use hydrostatic or pneumatic testing?
Hydrostatic testing uses a liquid, which stores far less energy and is generally safer at high pressure. Pneumatic testing uses gas and is used where a liquid is not acceptable or where leak detection needs a gas. Neometrix builds both, and the high pressure air test system offers hydraulic to 600 bar and pneumatic to 400 bar in one rig.
Q · 04 What pressure ranges can Neometrix machines reach?
Hydraulic proof-pressure benches run at 500, 700 and 1,000 bar, the bomb shell machine to 1,800 bar, the hose test bench to 2,500 bar, and the hydrogen cylinder burst chamber to 5,000 bar. Pneumatic leak testing runs at up to 250 bar. Tell us your test pressure and we will confirm the right machine.
Q · 05 How sensitive is leak testing?
It depends on the method. Helium mass-spectrometer detection reaches about 10⁻¹² mbar·L/s using vacuum, sniffer or bombing methods. The aerospace pressure and leak test rig records leak sensitivity of ±0.01%, and the pneumatic machines offer static leak, pressure-hold and stepwise modes.
Q · 06 Which standards do these machines reference?
Standards are cited per machine: IS 5844 on the hydrostatic test bench, ISO 6406 and IS 8451 on the volumetric expansion system, ISO 12619, UN ECE R134 and AIS 157 on the hydrogen machines, and NASA-STD-7012 leak-sensitivity guidance on the KU-7 tester. Other machines are built to customer-specified requirements.
