Overview

Precision altitude switch validation.

The Altitude Switch Test Rig evaluates the altitude switch — a critical avionic component that activates or deactivates an electrical circuit based on atmospheric pressure — at its design threshold of 7600 m (±150 m).

The rig is purpose-built to support the IJT-LSP (Intermediate Jet Trainer – Limited Series Production) Project, providing a complete electrical and pneumatic test environment for the altitude switch. It validates switch activation pressure, insulation integrity, and circuit continuity in a single integrated bench.

The altitude switch functions on a bellow-and-micro-switch principle: atmospheric pressure change causes the bellow assembly to expand, deflecting the adjusting cap nut until the normally-open micro switch closes and completes the electrical circuit. The rig replicates this stimulus precisely and measures the switch-over point.

Altitude threshold verification, insulation test, and circuit continuity — one bench, three checks, all MIL-grade.

Real-time feedback is provided via front-panel green and red LED indicator lamps (28 V DC) and a calibrated 3½-digit ammeter monitoring the switched circuit. All instruments are supplied with test and calibration certificates.

Key Features

What the rig delivers.

Four core capabilities that make this rig suitable for defence aviation test programmes.

Feature · 01

Accurate Altitude Threshold Sensing

Tests the altitude switch at its precise design activation pressure — equivalent to 7600 m ±150 m. Calibrated instruments ensure the switch-over point is measured with traceable accuracy.

Feature · 02

Aircraft Safety Enhancement

Validates that the altitude switch will perform reliably in service. Catches defective switches before aircraft integration, preventing electrical failures in altitude-dependent systems.

Feature · 03

Leak-Proof Pressure Verification

Confirms zero pressure loss at the test pressure level, verifying bellow assembly and pipe union sealing integrity. Essential for confirming the switch will hold calibration in service.

Feature · 04

Real-Time Monitoring

Front-panel green/red LED indicators (28 V DC) and calibrated DPI switch provide instant visual confirmation. 3½-digit ammeter displays switched circuit current in real time.

In Depth

The complete technical read.

Engineering narrative for test engineers and procurement teams specifying altitude switch test equipment for defence aviation programmes.

The altitude switch in IJT-LSP

The altitude switch is a safety-critical avionic component that monitors ambient pressure and provides an electrical signal when atmospheric pressure corresponds to altitudes below 7600 m ±150 m. This signal drives warning systems or activates protective circuits in the IJT aircraft.

Because the switch operates on absolute atmospheric pressure rather than gauge pressure, it must be tested under controlled low-pressure conditions that replicate the atmosphere at 7600 m. The Altitude Switch Test Rig provides this environment with precision and traceability.

Test methodology

Electrical setup

The altitude switch is connected via the MIL D 38999/26 FA 35 SN mating plug. The DC power supply is set to the required voltage and the insulation tester verifies dielectric integrity before pressurisation.

Pneumatic pressurisation & threshold verification

Pressure is applied to the switch pipe union. The bellow expands until the micro switch closes — confirmed by the green LED lamp illuminating and a current reading on the ammeter. The switch-over pressure is compared against the 7600 m ±150 m specification for pass/fail determination.

MIL-grade construction

Shielded PTFE wiring throughout, ferrule and thimble terminations at all connection points, and the matched MIL D 38999/26 FA 35 SN mating plug. All three primary instruments are supplied with individually traceable calibration certificates satisfying defence procurement quality plan requirements.

FAQ

Common questions.

Plain-language answers from the engineering team.

Q · 01What altitude threshold does the rig test?
The rig tests the altitude switch activation point at 7600 m ±150 m — the atmospheric pressure at which the bellow deflects sufficiently to close the normally-open micro switch and complete the aircraft electrical circuit.
Q · 02What electrical supply is needed?
230 V ±10%, single-phase, 50 Hz AC. The integrated DC power supply then provides 0–32 V DC at up to 2 A for the test circuit.
Q · 03Are the instruments calibrated and certified?
Yes. DC power supply, insulation tester, and ammeter are each supplied with individual test and calibration certificates traceable to national standards, meeting defence quality plan traceability requirements.
Q · 04Which mating connector does the rig use?
MIL D 38999/26 FA 35 SN — the correct series for the IJT-LSP altitude switch connector. Shielded PTFE wiring and ferrule/thimble terminations throughout.
Q · 05Can the rig be adapted for other altitude thresholds?
Yes. Neometrix can configure the rig for different altitude thresholds, connector types, and switch specifications. Contact us with the UUT part number and test requirement for a feasibility review.
Q · 06What after-sales support is available?
Installation, commissioning, operator training, preventive maintenance, and on-site service. Standard 12-month warranty on manufacturing defects. Annual maintenance contracts available post-warranty.
