Overview

Field nitrogen, on demand.

Aircraft nitrogen systems cannot wait for a logistics chain. When a squadron is on operational standby, every servicing operation must be self-sufficient. UGSSN2 provides that independence: nitrogen generated from air, compressed to aircraft-bottle pressure, and distributed without leaving the airbase.

The Nitrogen Generating Storage and Distribution System UGSSN2 is an advanced integrated vehicle designed for on-site nitrogen generation, high-pressure storage, and controlled distribution. Its primary service role is charging the nitrogen bottles of SU-30MKI aircraft to a working pressure of 350 Bar (350 kg/cm²).

Unlike conventional cylinder-based supply, UGSSN2 produces nitrogen from atmospheric air. Once generated, the gas is compressed, dried to a −65°C dew point, and stored in the on-board high-pressure cascade — ready for immediate dispensing to aircraft or ground equipment.

A complete field nitrogen infrastructure — generation, compression, storage, and distribution — deployed from a single towed trailer.

Four major sub-systems work in sequence: the trailer-mounted nitrogen generator produces gas at 99.5% purity; the high-pressure booster compresses it to 350 Bar; the on-board cylinder cascade stores 640 litres at working pressure; and the mobile transport carts carry charged cylinders to aircraft servicing points anywhere on the airfield.

Why mobile nitrogen generation matters

Aircraft nitrogen systems — landing gear struts, brake accumulators, fuel tank blankets, tyre charging — require periodic replenishment with high-purity, dry nitrogen. Conventionally, this means maintaining a supply chain of high-pressure cylinders: ordering, transporting, handling, exchanging, and returning empties. At a forward operating location or during a surge in operations, that supply chain can become a critical bottleneck.

UGSSN2 eliminates the supply chain for nitrogen. The vehicle generates nitrogen from atmospheric air wherever it is parked — no cylinders to source, no logistics lead time, no dependency on a gas supplier. The only consumables are electricity and the occasional replacement of molecular sieve media or filtration elements — both long-interval items measured in years, not weeks.

PSA technology explained

How Pressure Swing Adsorption works

Atmospheric air contains roughly 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. PSA exploits the different affinities of nitrogen and oxygen for carbon molecular sieve (CMS) media under pressure. When compressed air is forced through a CMS bed, oxygen is preferentially adsorbed. Nitrogen passes through relatively unimpeded, yielding a gas stream at 99.5% purity or higher at the bed outlet. Two CMS beds alternate in duty: one adsorbs while the other regenerates (desorbs oxygen) at lower pressure. The cycling is controlled automatically and produces a near-continuous nitrogen output stream.

Drying and filtration

UGSSN2 dries the gas to a dew point of −65°C at 150 kg/cm² — preventing ice formation in aircraft systems at any altitude or temperature within the operating envelope. Inlet and outlet 0.01-micron filters with clogging indicators capture particulates; elements are field-replaceable without specialist tools.

High-pressure cascade storage

PSA output pressure is far below the 350 Bar required for aircraft cylinder charging. UGSSN2 uses an electrically or pneumatically driven booster compressor at a minimum 10:1 pressure ratio to bring nitrogen to working pressure. The boosted gas fills the on-board cascade: 16 cylinders of 40 litres each, totalling 640 litres at 350 Bar, divided into four sub-sections with individual control and isolation valves on the distribution panel.

Military-grade environmental ruggedness

UGSSN2 is specified for the full operational environment of an Indian Air Force airbase — rain, salt fog, 100 km/hr wind loading, −20°C to +55°C, and altitude up to 3,500 m above sea level, covering high-altitude airbases in the Himalayan sector. All enclosures, connectors, and pneumatic components are selected for this environment.

Integration with wider nitrogen infrastructure

UGSSN2 works in conjunction with fixed nitrogen generation plant at main operating bases. For base-level infrastructure, Neometrix's PSA Nitrogen Generation Plant provides high-capacity, fixed-installation supply.
